Definition, Measurement and Filtration of Ultrafine Solid Particles Emitted by Diesel Engines

چکیده
There is increasing concern about health effects of particulate matter, PM, emitted from Diesel engines [1, 2, 3, 4]. PM is suspected of causing detrimental acute and chronic damage to the pulmonary and the cardiovascular system. Based on scientific proof, clean air legislation of many countries [5] therefore classifies Diesel soot as carcinogenic. Hence, it is mandatory to deploy the best available technology to minimize the PM emissions.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Distribution in Fine and Ultrafine Particles Emitted from Diesel Engines
This paper presents the results of PAH determination adsorbed on fine and ultrafine particles emitted to the air from diesel exhaust, with a special emphasis on sample preparation procedure prior to HPLC-FL analysis. Samples were taken with a personal environmental monitor and personal cascade impactor in order to ensure size-segregated sampling of air particulate matter (in the range of the fo...
متن کاملNanoparticle Emissions from Engines
Recently concerns about possible increases in emissions of ultrafine and nanoparticles and their environmental impact have been voiced. A major problem with assessing the significance of such emissions is that, unlike the carbonaceous soot particles associated with older Diesel engines, many of these particles are not formed in the engine but instead by gas-to-particle conversion processes from...
متن کاملEmission of metal - oxide particles from IC - engines
All conventional piston-driven combustion engines emit metal oxide particles. The main sources are the abrasion between piston-ring and cylinder, abrasion in the bearings, catalyst coating, lube-oil additives, and fuel additives for promoting the exhaust-gas after-treatment. Metal oxides, especially from transition metals, are very toxic when they are very fine. These particles have a high BET ...
متن کاملImpacts of a nanosized ceria additive on diesel engine emissions of particulate and gaseous pollutants.
Fuel additives incorporating nanosized ceria have been increasingly used in diesel engines as combustion promoters. However, few studies have assessed the impact of these nanotechnology-based additives on pollutant emissions. Here, we systematically compare emission rates of particulate and gaseous pollutants from a single-cylinder, four-cycle diesel engine using fuel mixes containing nanoceria...
متن کاملDiesel exhaust particles in the work environment and their analysis.
Diesel engines are widely used in industries, for example transportation, mining, and construction, because they efficiently produce high power. In diesel exhaust particles (DEP), the number of ultrafine particles, less than around 100 nm, is dominant in contrast to mass size distribution. Carcinogenic PAHs may be adsorbed on DEP at high concentrations. As occupational exposure usually occurs n...
